Some time ago I heard about this wonderful, wacky, surreal game. It was one of those games that never got the hoopla and limelight it supposedly deserved, so I set out to find a copy. "Rare!" screamed the descriptions on Ebay and Amazon right beside prices ranging as high as $39.82, not including shipping and handling. I twitched. How could a game from 2005 cost so much?* Still, the reviews and screencaps and trailers nagged at me, and I continued to seek out a copy, finally scoring a new copy for under $20, including shipping and handling. *does a little dance*

So, I've bagged it out in a few posts...and now I'm considering getting one (well, after I get a PS3). I'm dismissive of the system not for the games, because I know it has awesome games, but because the reports say the system is unreliable. My 3 major concerns are:
* it scratches discs * it overheats easily * you will probably own 6 within 2 months of your initial purchase
Now, I'm not just basing this on written and television reports, I had a friend who exchanged his 4 times before he got one that wouldn't break, and he also told me about a friend of his that had to replace his 7 times. I'll grant you this was in the early days of the 360, so I'd like to know if all the issues have been dealt with?
I'm really apprehensive because I don't want to be losing my save data (I am a roleplayer and losing my data midway would just destroy my soul) and I live in Australia, so replacing scratched games would be arse. EDIT: Based on the comments here and much droolage over the catalogue (there're also some Xbox games I'd like to play that will play on the 360), my plan is this - when I go to buy a PS3 (maaaybe next month), I will also pick up a 360, plus some games for both systems . I'll put both on my GO Mastercard and with the combined price, should be able to get a 2 yrs with no interest deal to pay them off. Yay! Still anxious, but less, knowing I can remove the hard drive.

| Wii |
[23 Jul 2008|04:23pm] |
For sake of shameless self plugging. Here is my Nintendo Wii Commercial I made back in film school. It is shot on 16mm. My buddy RJ is the star.
The only video I have currently not on Youtube is my short film, which can be found on my website, which there is a link to in my profile I believe.
Enjoy!

| PSP? |
[23 Jul 2008|07:07pm] |
Recommend me some PSP games. I'm taking a 10 hour drive to Otakon and back and my boyfriend's psp will be entertaining me when I'm taking a break from driving :D
buuut.... the games he has are puzzle games and final fantasy games and I'm not a big fan of either.
I like adventure games with a good story and good platformers. My current loves are Okami, Dreamfall, Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess. I went to gamestop and looked around but nothing really caught my interest except maybe Dead Head Fred (cause it looks entertaining, dunno about gameplay) and Bubble Bobble Revolution because I <3333 original Bubble Bobble on NES.

I was working the other day, and a woman came in with her two kids, a boy and a girl. They went to browsing in the DS section. The little girl, about 4, brought her mom a game and asked her for it. Honestly, it was a franchise game and the little girl probably recognized her favorite movie characters, but I nearly dropped the game boxes I was putting away when the woman took the game away from her and said, "No! Girls don't play video games."
What the heck! I really wanted to chew her out- not nessisarily to be mean, but I wanted to ask her what she was telling her daughter- what? Are girls not supposed to have fun, like boys? Are video games too hard for girls? Why does her brother get video games and she doesn't? What kind of message are you sending her? It made me angry, but I was working and it's not worth losing my job to pick a fight with customers.

So I'm probably one of the last people to do so, but I finally got Rock Band for my 360 last week. (I tried to hold out for the new one, but couldn't wait any more!) It is totally addicting and I'm loving it. Just having a small issue and was wondering if any of you had any advice: The Fender won't deploy when it is lifted. Any suggestions? I've played my friends' and it works just fine, so I know it is not me, but mine just won't recognize that it is being lifted the majority of the time. Sometimes it works right away though. Could it just be a bad guitar? Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!

| Favorite Dreamcast Games? |
[23 Jul 2008|01:03pm] |
Sorry to post so much, folks! :) This time I come to you with a question about your favorite games. I've been hankering to play D2 for the Sega Dreamcast since I read up more on D and whatnot. As such, I'm looking to buy a Dreamcast now. I never had a Dreamcast (or a Sega Genesis for that matter, I kind of borrowed a friend's now and then, haha). I kind of skipped from the SNES to the PS2 and was just more of a book person as a kid and teenager. So I'd like to try out some of the classics for the Dreamcast, if I can find them now.
What are some of your favorite Dreamcast games? What are some that you would recommend as must plays.

I know this is a rant that we've all had, but I was reading an article this morning and it made me a little sad.
This article is discussing new trends in gaming. On the third page, it discusses games that market to non-core audiences, including "kids, women, older people, and pretty much any one but gamers that were raised on Nintendo". Interesting that women in general are included there. Apparently we weren't interested in games until the Wii came out.
This is the comment that I left on the article: I enjoy reading these articles, but I will say that this sentence disturbs me every time I see it or something like it: "Nintendo's 2008 catalog will be filled with games that appeal to kids, women, older people, and pretty much any one but gamers that were raised on Nintendo." I can understand older people not being core gamers for the most part. I can understand grouping kids in there -- especially little kids (though Nintendo has been marketing to kids for a long time). What I can't tolerate is throwing "women" in there. There are plenty of women who are core gamers. None of us really appreciate being left out of the "core" category and expected to play games like "cooking mama" and "nintendogs". To be more specific, you could say "women who don't usually play games" or something like that, but don't just say women in general, because it's just not true.
(By the way, I'm not really knocking Cooking Mama and Nintendogs -- for those of you who like those games -- I'm just using them as examples of the types of games that we are expected to play.)

I am now having to refine that survey and am hoping that you will be a ble to help me again. Its all multiple choice so should only take a few minutes.

So I got wireless woo! But its a speedtouch V5.6 and my DS can't get through. It can't connect in other words because the sercurity settings don't suit.Even though it says WIFI certifiled. I have tried to dull it down by following the instructions but each time i did this it disconnected and I had to reconnect everything which takes ages. So - I am down to a last resort which is - I buy a WIFI USB thinge. Would this still work even though i have wireless? Would I need to plug it into the main computer or could I plug it into the side of my laptop?

| Shadow Hearts + Koudelka |

Shadow Hearts is an RPGfranchise so often overlooked and it'd be wonderful to spread the word to the uninitiated and discuss it with fellow appreciators.
I'm currently in the process of completing SH3, which I didn't all together enjoy anywhere near the last two, but it has its charms. By completing, I mean I'm making the rounds, gathering the final weapons and taking care of business before the final bosses. I own Koudelka and will probably play it as soon as I complete SH3. So far I've read a lot of negative reviews. Has anyone here played and found some level of enjoyment from the game? My only concern is the idea that weapons can break once you've reached a skill level point.

| Atlantica Online Beta |
[22 Jul 2008|09:22pm] |
Has anyone here heard of the new MMO Atlantica Online? It's in closed beta right now, but it's really interesting! The game takes place in the real world, over Asia, Europe, and Northern Africa, taking players into such dungeons as the Yggdrasil and beneath the Taj Mahal.
It's also quite nontraditional as far as gameplay goes, as you recruit a team of yourself + 8 mercenaries to do battle in a fast-paced, turn-based system. Mercenaries can be recruited from such classes as Viking warriors, Egyptian oracles, Shinto priestesses, and many more. You can also party up with three other players at once, ultimately bringing a 27-man team to battle. Finally, it even avoids the typical anime-style cliche so many free MMOs fall into, instead possessing a gorgeous almost gothic aesthetic.
Now, the reason I'm trying to drum up interest in the game is simple. If 10,000 people sign up before July 28th, all players will get to keep their beta accounts without having to start over from scratch.
You can find out more about the game here, and find beta keys still available on sites like File Planet and more. Give it a try; all you've got to lose is a little time!

So the Final Fantasy 4 remake for Nintendo DS came out today. I swung by my local gamestop on my lunch hour and snagged it.
I have to say I love it! The re-written script is wonderful and perfectly captures the classic high fantasy feel of the early Final Fantasy entries. The voice acting is superb. (and I'm a tough one to win over with english dubbing) Graphically, its one of the best looking DS games I've ever seen. The battles are a ton of fun. I've only played it a few hours but already hooked on it, heh. Its great seeing the classic scenes re-done with new visuals.
I never actually finished the original Final Fantasy 4 on my own, so this is a fun treat.
Anyone grab this today or planning on getting it?

| Missing out on the extras |
[22 Jul 2008|03:34pm] |
|
1) I'll miss out on the Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords expansion coming to XBLA because I bought Puzzle Quest on the PC and the PSP. 2) I miss out on Japan's Monster Hunter series goodies (downloadables, merchandise) because live in the USA where I bought Monster Hunter Freedom and Monster Hunter Freedom 2, whose own downloadables I can't get to anyway since I don't use the PSP online. 3) I miss out on all those extra music tracks for Guitar Hero III because I bought it on the Wii. 4) I miss out on the Rock Band Wii experience because I'm not interested in drums so it would just be the guitar portion I'd be interested in for which I'd buy the game only, but the Wii game disc won't work with my GH3 guitar. How many controllers per game is a person supposed to buy anyway? 5) I miss out on system exclusives because I bought another system instead. 6) I miss out on games because I don't have time to play them or the cash to buy them. 7) I miss out on life because I blog. Yeah, I admit this type of rant can be taken too far. But there are considerations here of expectations within a franchise, bonuses specific to regions, online only content, system exclusives, single player vs. multiplayer content, lack of multilingual localizations, merchandising, lack of cutscene captions for the hearing impaired... the pointed question for everyone is this: How left out do you feel as a gamer?

Have you ever read a review that has been so different to your own experience with a game, that is's made you seriously question whether the reviewer was even playing the same game?!?
